Your
thinking about designing a logo for
your
fabulous
company,
(your
group/association, team
or
whatever).
You want it to be
eye
catching but
also
represent
your
"Brand",
what
your
company
is
about.
Put some real
thought
into
your logo.
It's going to be
the symbol of your company
for years to
come.
Take our
logo, for instance, we jumped into
our
business
head
first. I
developed a pattern
for do rags
and
began embroidering on
them. We (my
husband
and
I) also
would do custom designs or
wording
on them. We
went to motorcycle shows to market and
sell
them.
We didn't
give our logo a whole lot of thought. I
saw
the
flame circle and
liked it. Motorcycles and flames
go
together
right? Our daughter
came up with the name,
Wilds
(our last name) and Rags
(for our do rags)
and
Custom Embroidery (what we do).
We did not
look at some critical elements:
1.) How the
business might change
And it did. The do rags did not sell as
well as we
had
anticipated.
At the shows we
would have people
wanting us to
embroider on
jackets, then a
neighbor
wanted coats for his company,
a booster club wanted
us
to embroider football shirts,
coats etc. Our business went
off into
a whole different direction. We
still have our
roots in the
motorcycle community but give some thought
on
how your business
may encompass more than
one
marketing focus before your slap down a
logo.
2.) How flexible is your
logo?
Can you change the colors or move it
around without
losing your
"brand"? Again using our logo as
an
example, we are pretty much
locked into the
colors
of red, black, yellow, orange.
I could do a Purple
pink version
for my clothes
for fun but people recognize
our flames. It is not
an easy design to change
color
on if a few years from now we want
to freshen
it up. I have alternated
the letters from being
red
to orange on different items. When
you
go to design your website you
want to incorporate
your colors into your site.
So choose
wisely. Pick
something you love and can be flexible
with because
you will
want to put it on
everything.
3.) Don't make it
complicated
From an embroidery/printing standpoint,
the simpler
the
better. You want it to be eye catching but
it
doesn't have to be
complicated. If you have
small
lettering, lettering that needs to be
outlined, blending
colors in your design, small
details, all these items
contribute to making your design
more expensive to
embroider
and if you have
small details they can
get lost. Screen
printing is usually charged
by
how many colors you have in your
design.
The more colors you have the more
expensive.
So keep that in
mind. You want your
logo
to look good whether it is embroidered
or printed,
whether it is a large jacket back
or a hat. Our logo
is an example of an expensive
logo. The blended
flames,
the satin stitch
circle around it. Thank
goodness we are
the embroiderer's
and printers!
Though we at one point
considered changing it,
people do recognize it even for
long periods
of time.
We have always
had positive comments
on it. It has
become our "Brand" and it
looks
like it will be with us for the
years to come.
I hope this has helped someone.
